The version released in the English-speaking regions is actually a director's cut version from Japan. His journey in the resulting Vortex World begins once he has been granted demonic power from a Magatama given by a mysterious boy. The player takes control of a half-human half-demon silent protagonist whom the player names. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was released nine years after Shin Megami Tensei II, and was the first Megami Tensei game in the series to be released into the United States using the "Megami Tensei" name. It is the third main game in the Shin Megami Tensei series.
